Holmfirth, UK – A tawny owl has been shot dead on moorland leased for grouse shooting by Yorkshire Water.
A tawny owl has been shot dead on a West Yorkshire moorland leased for grouse shooting by Yorkshire Water. The persecuted bird of prey was discovered on 1 October on Wessenden Head & Digley Moor, near Holmfirth, prompting the police to launch a wildlife crime investigation.
Wild Moors and the League Against Cruel Sports have responded to the owl killing with renewed calls for the utility business to stop leasing moorland for grouse shooting. The wildlife protection organisations have pointed to the established links between grouse moor management and bird of prey persecution, which routinely involves gamekeepers killing protected species which predate on grouse to increase game birds populations for shooting parties.
Six randomly-chosen moors leased out by Yorkshire Water for grouse shooting have been investigated by Wild Moors since August, uncovering systematic wildlife persecution and environmental degradation on each. This has resulted in rising pressure for the utility company to end grouse shooting on its land.
Luke Steele, Director of Wild Moors, said:
“Wildlife persecution uncovered on Wessenden Head and Digley Moor, where a beautiful tawny owl has been shot and killed in cold blood, is clearly inexcusable. It is well established that such acts are often carried out by gamekeepers, who eradicate natural predators by trap, snare and gun to increase red grouse populations for shooting parties.
“With this being the seventh Yorkshire Water moor leased for grouse shooting where extermination of wildlife and environmental degradation has been documented since August, it is clear there is an ecological scandal ongoing and tough action from the utility business must be taken.
“If Yorkshire Water wants to be recognised as taking its environmental responsibilities seriously, then ending its grouse shooting leases is the only course of action that will suffice. By removing the negative impact allowing the practice has on wildlife, habitat and the region’s reputation, Yorkshire Water will truly become the environmental champion it espouses to be.”
Nick Weston, Head of Campaigns at League Against Cruel Sports, says:
“It is not a coincidence that this bird of prey was found shot over a grouse moor, the grouse shooting industry is underpinned by illegal wildlife persecution. Why? Because birds of prey are bad for profits. It is a morbid irony that every grouse eaten by an owl or raptor is one less bird to be needlessly shot by a paying customer who seeks to end life just for fun. This is inexcusable. It’s time for Yorkshire Water to end shooting on its land.”
Every local authority in the county, including nearby Peak District National Park Authority, has ended the bloodsport on their uplands estates, having once allowed it, and Yorkshire Water is now being urged to follow their example. Over 16,000 people have signed a petition to Yorkshire Water’s CEO Richard Flint, demanding the utility company brings its grouse shooting leases to an end.

Understanding COSC Validation and Its Importance in Horology
COSC Validation and its Stringent Standards
Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres, or the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres, is the official Switzerland testing agency that certifies the precision and precision of timepieces. COSC accreditation is a mark of excellent craftsmanship and reliability in chronometry. Not all timepiece brands follow COSC certification, such as Hublot, which instead adheres to its proprietary stringent criteria with movements like the UNICO calibre, achieving similar precision.
The Science of Exact Timekeeping
The core mechanism of a mechanical timepiece involves the mainspring, which delivers power as it loosens. This system, however, can be vulnerable to environmental elements that may affect its accuracy. COSC-validated movements undergo rigorous testing—over fifteen days in various circumstances (five positions, three temperatures)—to ensure their durability and reliability. The tests assess:
Average daily rate precision between -4 and +6 secs.
Mean variation, highest variation levels, and impacts of temperature changes.
Why COSC Accreditation Is Important
For watch aficionados and collectors, a COSC-accredited timepiece isn’t just a piece of tech but a testament to lasting quality and accuracy. It symbolizes a watch that:
Presents outstanding reliability and precision.
Ensures assurance of quality across the whole construction of the watch.
Is likely to retain its worth more effectively, making it a sound choice.
Well-known Chronometer Manufacturers
Several famous brands prioritize COSC accreditation for their timepieces, including Rolex, Omega, Breitling, and Longines, among others. Longines, for instance, provides collections like the Record and Soul, which feature COSC-accredited mechanisms equipped with cutting-edge substances like silicone equilibrium springs to boost resilience and efficiency.
Historic Background and the Development of Chronometers
The concept of the chronometer originates back to the requirement for accurate timekeeping for navigational at sea, highlighted by John Harrison’s work in the eighteenth cent. Since the official establishment of Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres in 1973, the certification has become a benchmark for judging the precision of luxury watches, maintaining a legacy of superiority in horology.
Conclusion
Owning a COSC-certified watch is more than an aesthetic selection; it’s a commitment to quality and precision. For those appreciating accuracy above all, the COSC certification offers peace of mind, guaranteeing that each certified timepiece will perform reliably under various conditions. Whether for individual satisfaction or as an investment, COSC-validated watches distinguish themselves in the world of horology, carrying on a legacy of meticulous timekeeping.
